There’s been a lot of talk about the south of Italy and how it is now making some of the most exciting wines in the country. But in my opinion, it still lags well behind the great wine regions of Italy such as Tuscany and Piedmont. Nonetheless, an exciting new producer or new wine seems to surface just about every year in my blind tastings.

I was also happy to see Tasca d'Almerita back in form with its Rosso del Conte. This is a big, powerful red that I have many fond memories of drinking two decades ago in Palermo. And the 2004 is along the same lines, with plenty of rich fruit and tannins.
