We’ve grown our Chardonnay since 1979, at which point Lucio Tasca d’Almerita decided to try to grow this international vine variety by planting 5 rows of rooted vines that came from Burgundy. This is where in 1984 the San Francesco Vineyard was born. The soil is clay-rich, sandy and slightly chalky, mainly exposed on the southwest, on the lower part of the hill at an elevation of about 500 meters at our Regaleali estate, in the heart of Sicily. The 2015 edition of the Oscars for wine, promoted by the Italian Foundation for Sommelier and Bibenda, awarded for the second time one of our wines. After winning for the 2010 vintage, the 2012 Chardonnay – was elected “best Italian white wine”. With the first vintage DOC CONTEA DI SCALFANI SICILIA, San Francesco Vineyard will be included on the label describing the origin, a unique vineyard. The Oscars for wine will be broadcasted on RaiDue late night July 1st.
