Robert Parker discovers "the land of Syrah"

"The 2012 Monreale Syrah La Monaca is a shapely and opulent red wine that shows the best side of Sicilian Syrah (one of the most interesting vinous phenomena to emerge from the island in recent years). The wine reveals a warm and inviting personality with characteristic aromas of dark fruit, prune, cured meat and smoked bacon. La Monaca offers a heavily savory and spicy interpretation of Syrah. The wine is thick in terms of texture with lasting layers of velvety intensity and richness. Sallier de la Tour is one of the five estates operated by Tasca Conti d'Almerita. This 135-hectare property is located in the Monreale area near Palermo and is showing very interesting results with Syrah". (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

La Monaca, whose name is identical to that of the winery in Art Nouveau style, is a selection of the best Syrah grapes of the estate. It is the Sicilian expression of a variety whose origin is unknown, but which has found in the Camporeale area an ideal place to grow. After a long maceration, the wine matures in French oak barrels of different ages for 12 months.
