Many define it as the true “SuperTasca.” Iconic wine of the company, it is the result of an intuition of Count Giuseppe who in 1954 planted vineyards of Perricone and Nero d’Avola, cultivated as bushes, with the aim of creating an important red that could match French wines for elegance and longevity. The true expression of the personality of the producer and the terroir of origin.
Once widely planted in Sicily – especially in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani, where it was for many years the only red variety – Perricone (also known as Pignatello) is today a rarity. The clusters are long, often measuring as much as 33 centimetres, conic-cylindrical in shape, and of medium density. The bluish berry is large and round, with thick but not particularly tough skin and a heavy bloom. It produces wines that are relatively high in alcohol though not particularly rich in extract.
Despite its long history, the Nero d'Avola grape has only become widely known and loved in recent years; now, this native Sicilian variety has reached great heights all over Italy and the world. Passion and dedication lie behind our red monovarietal, starting with the low yields in the vineyard which guarantee a high-quality vintage of notable concentration. By ageing it partly in wood and parly in steel vats, we can supplement the fresh fruity notes of a young wine with elegant spices and liquorice which bode very well for further maturing.
