The blessed hills of Regaleali.

"That is how I’ve always heard them named and so this is how I hold them in my heart".

In 1830 the Tasca brothers purchased Tenuta Regaleali, a green oasis in the center of Sicily in the county of Sclafani. Since then, each generation of the Tasca d’Almerita family has cared for this land, sharing its bounty with passion.

BEAUTY IS BIRTH,
ORIGIN, BEGINNING.
AS THE START OF A JOURNEY.
THAT MARKS THE HISTORY
OF AN ENTIRE FAMILY.
IT IS AN OASIS IN SICILY
HIDDEN AMONG THE HIGH, GREEN HILLS.
BEAUTY IS DIVERSITY.
OF LANDSCAPES, SOILS, VINES.
BEAUTY IS REGALEALI
AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO CULTIVATE IT.

After the two wars of the last century, during a time when Sicily was not yet known its agriculture nor for the diversity of its land, The Tasca d’Almerita family had already started making wines at Tenuta Regaleali: a fresh, light white; a medium-bodied red; and a respectable rosé — the three Regaleali Classics on which the winery built its reputation.

In 1959 Count Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita planted Perricone and Nero d’Avola vines of the alberello style on the San Lucio hill, investing in a future that was almost unimaginable to most Sicilians. With this plot, he created the basis for the first wine from a single vineyard in Sicily: the “Riserva del Conte” (later called Rosso del Conte) was first sold to the public as a 1970 vintage. A red of particular longevity, it is still an icon of the estate today. In the early 1980s, Nozze d’Oro took center stage: a white wine from native grapes (Inzolia and “Sauvignon Tasca”) capable of long bottle aging. Towards the end of the same decade, Giuseppe’s son, Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, had the fortunate intuition to bring the most well-known international grape varieties to Sicily to compete with the world’s greatest wineries.

After a few experimental harvests, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay were created, a first in Sicily: wines that introduced the winery’s successful reputation abroad.

From that moment on, the Tasca d’Almerita family began to enhance local varieties: Nero d’Avola, Catarratto, Perricone (typical of the area), Nerello Mascalese, and Grillo. Today there are 25 varieties in production at Tenuta Regaleali.

Since 2001 Alberto Tasca has been entrusted with the task of leading the family business, with the aim of strengthening the family’s consistent vision of quality and continuous experimentation.

The Regaleali estate spans nearly 600 hectares, with 12 types of soils and six hills between 450 and 850 above msl. It can be understood as an island unto itself, a unique land deserving of precise study. All wines come from a single vineyard or multiple vineyards, always within the same estate.

Today, the time has come to learn even more about the details of this parcel of land that Alberto’s grandfather, Count Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita, called the “blessed hills of Regaleali.” Time to explore the complex aspects of the vineyard-wine relationship, the detailed interactions between the individual vineyard plots ,and the great biodiversity of the environment in which they are immersed.

Eating

At Case Grandi you will be guided through the flavors of the kitchen garden for a culinary journey. Dive into local tradition built on handed-down recipes, thanks to the memory and skills of home cooks who interpret the styles of the historical “monsù” (chefs of aristocratic Sicilian and Neapolitan families) and to the local knowledge coming from practices of the historical Sicilian estates.

At Case Vecchie, Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School retraces this tradition by explaining and demonstrating it in cooking classes.
